Novel H1N1 Influenza Information Update
Good Afternoon,
We have all been concerned about the presence of the H1N1 (swine) flu after two cases were confirmed in Rutland High School students on May 28 and 30. I am pleased to be able to tell you that there have been no additional cases of this flu reported in any of the Rutland City schools since that time. Both students have recovered and returned to school after the recommended period of time. Our school nurses continue to monitor this situation carefully to assess each individual situation for the possible need for physician evaluation.
H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. It is contagious and most likely spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Symptoms are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
Persons with febrile respiratory illness should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading infections (including influenza and other respiratory illnesses) to others in their communities. In addition, respiratory etiquette and frequent handwashing can lessen the spread of respiratory illness.
Even if you are concerned that you may have been exposed to this virus through casual exposure, there is no need to seek medical attention unless you actually have flu-like symptoms. However, people who have underlying medical conditions should consult their physicians regarding flu concerns if they have been exposed to someone with the flu.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school nurse or healthcare provider. For more information visit www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu or www.healthvermont.gov.
